Question

siding a shed before roofing

i was gonna put the siding on my shed at the upside down V down to where it no longer needs angle cuts before i post roof OSB panes. the reason for it is that this way i get to spare myself of pre-cutting siding planks to fit the length and angle (what a horrible nightmare to have to do) and i just nail them with the slack dangling and then trim it off with a reciprocating saw. after the nightmare of cutting my rafters with birds' mouths to fit, and going back 1000 times until it fit, i am just sick of calibrating length and angle for the rest of my life. i think doing siding at the upside down V like i described above is plain smart but carpentry nazis might disagree saying it's too lazy or slack or whatever.

what does everyone think ?

thanks

I think if you consider it a nightmare, DIY may not be for you.

You should be having fun with your project.

The method you describe, if I'm reading it right, is to run your siding above the gable rafters, then use the rafter as a guide to trim off the tops, correct?

You could do that, or tack the piece in place, scribe the top, then remove to cut with a circular saw. Replace the siding using the tack holes to register the piece.

I plan to build a shed this Spring. I also plan to have fun with it and enjoy the time invested in the project.

i am not miserable doing it, i just like to do everything the easiest way possible, i.e. not shed any unnecessary sweat or do it in a way more difficult than necessary.

you are correct, i do plan to use the rafters to guide my saw to make an exact cut of the siding planks so i don't have to do it before i put them on, as i know i will NEVER achieve the perfect cut.

i did the same with sheathing the shed with OSB, i would put the whole OSB on and then trim the overhangs with a sawzall rather than precutting it before posting ... helluva lot easier
