cedar siding that is cracking and there are gaps between the overlays. these issues are over the entire house but vary in severity. the worst is the southern facing side and it tends to be worse around windows. i am looking of the best way to repair the siding.....

Add spacing wedges below the siding's bottom edge to allow it to breathe. Repair by replacing the boards or using a wood epoxy. For rotted sections use a hardener first.

Am I understanding correctly, You caulked the lap joint (horizontally) of one board to the next one below? Be safe, G

That would be a no-no. This is the same area I suggested adding a spacer to allow the wood to breathe better. This will help stop it from cracking more.

That was my polite way of saying - "WHAT, Bob? You said caulk the overlays!!!" No response from the O.P., usually they now ask how to get caulking off. Be safe, G

I was responding to the pictures. Seems one would fix the broken siding edge, not seal off the underside of the lapped joint. But your right, we've got to be careful and expect anything.
