shingling gable end rakes

I removed some asbestos siding to reveal these beautiful scalloped shingles.

My neighbor has the duplicate house to mine, and has the original gable end.
It looks like this:

I'm trying to wrap my around how to do this.

Do I need upside down shingles on the rake to fur out each course, followed by a right side up shingle?

I can see the old lines, but for some reason I can't quite understand this.
I've done a lot of siding, not sure why this is confusing. I think I'm thinking too hard.
