Is this shelving unit structurally sound?
I found this sketchup plan, this is EXACTLY what I wanted to build in my basement. My question is, is anything wrong with the way this is built? If you go to 3D view and rotate the shelving unit to the back, you will see there are no vertical supports in that 8' section. There is one vertical support in the front but nothing in the back.
Is this ok? Should I modify this in any way? I would put another vertical support in the back but I wanted to keep the back of the unit flush so I could put it up against the wall. Thanks guys... Here's the link to the sketchup plan: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehou...d&prevstart=24 Last edited by Goldglv; 01-04-2011 at 10:59 PM. |

I did something very similar but cut my plywood to fit between the verticals without notching them. Didn't use the vertical support halfway across either. Also, I used 2 x 3s instead of 2 x 4s and turned the verticals 90 degrees to what is shown in the drawing. Holds anything I can lift basically. There is a space between wall and back of shelf however.
