Shear around existing window
In the process of adding an addition I am required to shear an existing exterior wall. I removed the stucco, added insulation and now I'm ready to shear it with plywood. There is an existing window on this wall and my question is, how do I shear around the window?

I have 4 other windows framed with shear already around them but they are all new construction so the windows will nail into the plywood which completely surrounds the frame. For the existing window, however, the nail fin is already there so I'm wondering where to extend the plywood to. Should I butt it up against the aluminum edges of the fins or should I put the plywood over the fins and up to the edge of the window?

I'm not sure what the windows originally were (something aluminum) but they have been retro-fitted with Milgard Classic Vinyl ones about 10 years ago. So the visible part of the window is vinyl but with the stucco off the aluminum nailing fin is exposed.

You really want the nail flange to the outside of the plywood. It’s important that the bottom nail flange goes over the top of the building paper so water can’t get to the wood.

I realize that is ideal, but removing the window opens up a huge can of worms in both extra construction and inspection requirements. Is there any way I can keep this window in and shear around it?

Around here you double the bottom window sill, add blocking from the king stud/jack to the next inboard stud of the full panel and add a flat strap (on the lower sill over the ply sheathing) to keep continuity for shear-flow. Add another strap above the window centered on the window opening running horizontally.

Be safe, Gary
