Shadow box molding on stairs

I'm installing shadow box molding up stairs. How can I cut the extreme obtuse mitres acurately? I have just be marking angles on walls and cutting them in half. I then take the molding and make marks on each side of molding and make a straight line. I then have be holding molding on mitre saw and cut free hand, trying to cut right on line.

There must be an easier way?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Miter saws swivel to allow for the cuts you desire. There should be no need to hold it as you describe.
Compound miter saws swivel and tilt to achieve 2 angles at once.

you will need to build a jig to use on your miterbox or table saw. a miterbox will not cut steep enough
you will need to find the angle/ intersection of the two pieces, subtract that from 90, set your saw to that number and hold your piece perpendicular to your miterbox fence

Thanks. Didn't even consider table saw.
