Rule of thumb on chair railing height?

Hi all. I wanted to stop by and ask about chair railing height. I bought a house a couple of months ago, that I'm going to be living in. Once I get done redoing the outdated inside, that is. It had all this... off-putting chair railing all throughout the house. In almost every room. So I got rid of most of it, except for in the dining room.

Where I felt it was appropriate. However it looks a little... low. So how high should it be? What is the rule of thumb for high high chair railing should be, in relation to the top of the baseboards?

For a standard 8-foot ceiling, they should be installed about 32 inches from the floor

Rule of thumb on chair railing height?

This has been debated many times by many different groups with not much agreement. If you chose to follow the classical orders than 32" is too high, if not then you put it at whatever height you like. George Walker has a very good DVD which covers this subject and many other design questions.

Ok thanks for the replies everyone. Yeah its just a standard 8 foot ceiling. I'll measure them and make sure they're right. It may suck if I have to move them. Since the people who built the house had them put on right after the texture was sprayed. Now several coats of paint later, its got to be retextured to blend in. I hope there is some "fade effect" that can be done, without having to re-texture the whole wall.
