routering corner edges on square columns

I would like to router part of the corners from porch square column. I have not installed the cedar wrap around boards but hope to get extra detail with some router work. Friend said use a 45 degree bit. I also want to leave square edge approx 5" at each end and gentle go into the edging look.

Do I free hand this or set up a jig? thanks for a post. m

Make a jig. Especially if you have more than one post to do. The results will be a lot more consistent.
