Right hung door-to-left hung?

My daughter has a closet door that is hung on the right side. The light switch is also on the right side. Can I change the door to left hung, in a prehung opening? Is there any issues with this that I don't see? Or would I be better off moving the light switch to the other side? I can do either, just looking for the easy way out.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

well its not easy either way. To switch the door you're going to have to mortise out for the hinges on the other side of the door and where the plunger will hit the other side of the jamb. Not really hard, just not real easy to get it lined up just right. Just measure where the hinges are on the other side and duplicate it on the new side. Then fill in the old mortises and your done.

Just know that if the door has a beveled edge, the bevel will be towards the stop when you flip it around. Makes for some ugly looking clearances if you have to plane the bevel off. And if it happens to be beveled on the hinge edge, you may have to do some shimming under the hinges to keep that edge from binding in the jamb.

They have remote control switches available now, that occupies the position of the regular switch. The remote is fastened to the wall in any location that may be convenient. Saves a lot of reno time and expense! The draw-back is that the battery's need to be replaced, from time to time. Same idea as these programable thermostats.
