Replacing window sash with rotten bottom
Hi, my wife has given the ultimatum that this window must be fixed before cold weather comes again as it is in one of our boy's rooms. (Last winter he made it through with plastic sheeting sealing the gap but I know it's time to fix this correctly.) I am looking for advice on how to get the rotten sash out. The window is fairly old and wood with aluminum cladding. The slides on the sides are vinyl with springs in the channels. The outside window trim is vinyl. I've never pulled a sash before and I'm not sure what needs to come off to be able to do this. Should I basically start from the outside pulling trim off or is there generally a better way to go?

Once I have the sash out, where would I go to get it rebuilt, or is it something I could do with basic hand tools? Basically the bottom horizontal rail is gone and the vertical rail bottoms are black and crumbly.

I agree. If the sash is rotten, the sill is probably getting there too.

You can have a new sash built by a window company, or perhaps find someone in your area that rebuilds old window sashes...But...The costs will probably rival or exceed that of a new window. Replacing a window isn't too big of a deal if you have some basic skills and tools. We can talk you through it for sure.

Can you post some pictures of the problem area and the entire window?
