Repairing cracks in plaster walls
Any tips?

Joint compound for small cracks.
Durabond for larger ones.

A pro painter friend of mine with more than 40 years experience painting old homes around here gave me his solution to plaster cracks. Says that it has never failed to hold up.
Carefully scrape out any loose plaster from the crack, and mud in a 6"-8" wide strip of black plastic screen "wire" over the crack just like you would do sheetrock tape, feathering the edges.
The plastic screen "wire" holds the compound and cracks better. I don't have any plaster walls or ceilings, so have never tried it, but he swears by it and has a top notch rep.
Good luck!

This come from experience with an old house - (similiar to Redlines advice.).

Everytime I used drywall or "spackling compound" compound the crack would come back -

Whenever I used "real plaster" it held forever. (Durabond may be better ?)

For wide cracks Mike's is a good suggestion - it works, but can be difficult to get it to "match" - prabably due to my lack of skill.

i just filled some pretty big holes in my plaster wall w/ Durabond. I mixed it a bit thicker than usual so it would hold place better and really work it in there. Durabond shrinks quite a bit, so hit it with a few coates and its rock solid. Actually, because I have a curious mind, once the first hole I did had dried completely, I attempted to knock the plug through the wall with a hard plastic tube like a sharpie marker. It held!
