Repairing bedroom door jamb

Broke through a locked bedroom door the other day and now I need your help fixing it. Following are photos of the broken door jamb.





What is the best way to repair this?

Looks to me like the best fix is going to involve replacing the broken door jam and trim. It's fortunate that the woodwork is painted. That will save you having to match wood type, stain color and sheen of clear finish. You may be able to use a wider piece of finish trim to cover the chipped paint on the inside (knob side) of the door frame.

Do you own any woodworking tools?

Is this a rental? You might be better off being honest with the landlord if that's the case.

If you can find the piece that broke off the back, you might try to glue it back on with some clamps and finishing nails. Those doors are really only for privacy (usually) and the wood piece you glue back on will be plenty strong for everyday needs. After that, some wood putty, sanding, repaint and it should all be ok.

I agree with Bob and Ron...The only thing I might add is that you should
dry fit the broken piece to it's location. There might be some tiny splinters
that will keep it from aligning correctly.
You could try securing the glued piece with blue tape before clamping and nailing.

You could use a multi-tool and remove the broken section--cut along the stop molding and make a straight cut above and below the break------splice in a repair piece --putty and sand.

I usually just take the little pin from on top of the door casing and use it to unlock the door.....

Anyway, yeah, I'd do my best to glue in the old piece.
