Remodeling walls in a modular home

I'm here trying to find some good advice on how to remodel the walls in the modular home I just purchased. The living room walls appear to be split in sections with wooden molding type strips going up and down approximately 3' apart from each other. I'd like to remove these strips and somehow seal up and smooth over the surface in order to paint the walls. What I'm wondering is this.... are thses strips of wood there to serve a specific purpose or are they there just for 'decoration'? Does anyone know if these are standard on all modulars? Is it safe to remove them? And if so, what would be the best way to go about accomplishing this remodeling project? Any help I can get on this matter would be very much appreciated!!

Thank you so much!!

they were used to cover up the joint between the sheets of drywall. The drywall came with wallpaper already on it so there wasn't really any other less expensive method of covering the joints.

There have been some threads here that dealt with this. I have a terrible time with the search engine trying to find anything so I gave up and simply suggest others give it a try.
