Refinishing worn old bar chair tops?

I'm thinking about trying out water based polyurethane to restore the round wood tops of some old bar stools we have. The wood is worn white in spots from people's butts and from being used as temporary little tables. Is this a good idea, or will it look bad?

Refinishing worn old bar chair tops?

Just make sure to sand off all the old finish first. Start with 80 grit paper then work up to a 100 or 120 grit. Are you trying to match the finish to something else?

Refinishing worn old bar chair tops?

Thanks I will try that. I was thinking about doing one fine sand 220 over what was there, but maybe that's not enough.
This is my first refinish job, I'm just trying to make it look like it did before. I think they put some kind of clear coat over the wood itself. Probably varnish.
