Refinishing furniture blunder. Did i just ruin my piece of furniture?

This is furniture i've had since i was a kid. Probably a good 15-20 years old. The furniture to me feels like 100 percent wood. Anyway, as i was sanding down a few waterspots i noticed this spot beginning to uncover. Is this not 100% real wood? Did i just sand down into particle board? SEE PICTURES BELOW the quality is really crappy because they won't let me upload larger than 100k files ARGH!!!!

its not real clear but that looks almost like particle board with veneer on it. on a lot of furniture they quit using real wood about 40 or more years ago.

I was just trying to take a better picture, turned the whole thing over and yep, there she is... the sides have the same wood and on the very bottom you can see it is definitely particle board. Now what? Is there a way i can fix this? I just mistakenly sanded down to particle board. Really, they've been making this cheap crap for 40 years?

You can put new veneer on it, or buy new.

I would purchase a small role of veneer (the extra thin stuff), cut our a patch, glue in place. Putty seam if it bothers you, then paint.

Home Depot.
