Default Refinishing a cedar chest

My wife and I have a chedar chest given to us by her grandma.

We were suggested we could have it and refinish it. I have tried to just sand the surface off but it does not want to come off very easy.

I actually had to score it with an exacto knife just to break the surface so I sand it.

That's just the top surface but I was wondering if there is any other sanding discs I can use that would help rough remove the material much easier?

No stripper? Stripping is a necessary step to remove old finishes, which makes sanding very easy. It sounds like you have a very tough finish though. What grit have you been grinding it with? if its 300 or higher then those are finish sanding grits. sometimes I like to skip the stripping process if I know the piece is solid. BUt I use low grit sandpaper and make sure I work my way up to at least 400
