Red Oak Stair Treads...Is that sap?!?
I bought red oak stair treads from one of the big box stores. They came sanded to a 150 grit finish. I sanded them to a 220 grit finish then stained them with oil-based stain. I did two coats of stain and as it was drying noticed that there are small wet spots on the wood. It looks to me like sap as it is coming from the darker grains of the wood-if that makes sense. What can I do about this? I want to make sure the boards are completely dry before the poly goes on as I don't want issues with the poly adhering to the boards. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I've stained hundreds of red oak treads and never once saw any sap coming out of them.
Got some pictures?

If your board does in deed have sap you would easily be able to tell as it will be spots of extremly discolored wood. I deal with red oak treads at work everyday and the sap wood is a solid grey in color and is easy to pick out. Are you sure its not water stains?

From reading other threads I believe it is not sap but stain. Seems other people have had this problem when using minwax stain on red oak. I may just have to keep wiping and wait for it to dry/stop bleeding.

Try pre staining the material. I know that's only for light soft wood but its worth trying on scrap oak

My boards have stopped leaking! I guess I just needed to give it some more time.
Thanks for the feedback!

Red oak is very porous. It's not unusual for deep pores to hold stain that may take a long time to dry. I take an air hose and blow the wet stain out of those pores at least a day before I plan to finish coat them.
