Recessed Shelves

I'm gonna be wall mounting my 46" flat screen tv in my bedroom. Which is a really simple project. But I am thinking about making some recessed shelving underneath it or to the side of it to store my satellite receiver and DVD player. But I have never done this before. I've been reading up on how to do this and it don't seem too hard. Any suggestions and or tips that may help me out? ThanksGuys.

Recessing the shelves would, of course, require there being room inside the walls to do it. And that there wasn't anything else already in there. You can certainly get a 3.5" recess into a typical stud wall if there's nothing else there already. But anything deeper would require room on the other side of the wall. If it's a closet or something then perhaps it'd work. Bear in mind you can't just cut through a stud and leave it hanging. You, generally, have to install a header across the top of the space. This to let the wall continue to carry it's load properly. This gets even more important (and more complicated) if it's a load-bearing wall. That would absolutely require a header and presumably support studs underneath.

So yeah, it's "possible". But there's a lot of things to consider, and a lot of work to handle them. Thus it might be considerably easier to find alternative storage for the stuff.

Definitely locate your studs first. Lay it all out to make sure it fits. I dont know too many dvd or cable boxes that are less than 14 1/2" wide and definitely not too many that are at most 5 1/2 deep. Can you post a picture of what you'd like to do.

When I hear recessed I think set back from the face of the wall.

You could recess a portion of the shelf into the wall with the remainder sticking out. I mean the tv will stick away from the wall at least 6".

Snap a pic when you can and post it using the "Go Advanced" button below. Give us the dimensions of the shelves you want and a little info about the wall (exterior, interior, load bearing, stud spacing, etc) and we'd be more than happy to walk you thru it.

You are right about the width and depths. I'd more than likely have to cut into a stud, which I'd really hate to do. I'm just an average DIY'R, far from professional. Lol. I'd probably tear my wall up if I start cutting into studs.

Will do man. I will probably work on that this weekend. Will snap a few pics before starting and post them for you to see. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.
