Railing on Stairs
1 Attachment(s)
I have an open stairway leading to a landing then turning 90 degrees on down to the bottom floor. I want to install posts, spindles, and railing around the stairs on the upper floor using pieces from the bulding supply dealer. What I'm not sure about is how to make the transition from the post at the top of the stairs to the railing going down the stairs...without having some special piece made up. Do I even have to connect these? I thought I read somewhere that the railings had to connect...but maybe that was on outdoor decks? Any help greatly appreciated!

I know this is not exactly like yours but at the top of the stairs you will want to connect the railings together. You will need to angle the rail to fit to the newel post like in the picture below.

This is what you will use to fasten them together.

Hope this helps, Dave.

Thanks Big Dave...hopefully you can see in the tiny picture that the post at the top of the stairs doesn't line up with the railing on the stairs (at the question mark). I don't know how to get them connected other than installing another post alongside the first...which sounds ugly.

Sorry, I didn't see the question mark. What I would do then is run the railing to the top then mitre back to the post with a short peice. Another post would look kinda dumb. I'll try to find a picture and post it of what I'm talking about.

They make special railing pieces, you could get something like this one and retro fit it.

There you go. I usually just make mine with a couple of miters. but that one would probably be stronger. Here is a picture I drew of what I was talking about.

:) Thanks Hammatime and Big Dave. I'll have to check with building supplies for that 90 degree piece...otherwise I'll have to try the mitre thing...not sure how that will go with the profiled railing (like hammatime's pic). Thanks again!!
