Quicker to screw down by using a hammer first.

Is this a true statement? "Is it a quicker use technique to first hammer a screw down a bit before taking it all the way down with the screwdriver?

Wish I could say I have never done that...but...

I catch my guys doing it- they're fired. It's far too easy to set the screw too deep and you have now destroyed the cell structure of the wood where the screw is supposed to be holding. Maybe I expect professional results from my guys but starting a screw with a cordless is just too easy to stoop to using a hammer.

The only time the two should ever meet in my opinion is to set up a bunch of screws for the guy with the driver. If screwing down a subfloor, we will have a helper "spot" the screws and give them a light tap to hold them vertical, then the guy with the driver follows.

I guess the real question is when to predrill a hole before driving a screw...otherwise, you could split the wood.

I do it all the time when installing cement board.
