Default Questions about stair railing

I want to install a railing on a knee wall. I have about 6 feet of kneewall on the stairs leading to the basement. I want to attach the balusters directly to a trim piece like in the picture below. I am wondering how they do that. Do they use a dowel piece? Probably simple but I am wondering if anyone has ideas?
