Question about upgrading door casings

I'm finally finishing my kitchen renovation after 10 months and the next step is to install the base trim and door casings. For the door casings, we would like to use the fluted trim w/rosettes for the 3 doors coming into the kitchen.

My question.... if I upgrade those three doors, should I upgrade all the doors on the main floor with the fluted casing and rosettes? Would it look odd to only upgrade the doors in the kitchen area? What about the windows.... would they need to have the same type of fluted trim w/rosettes or could I stay with the regular trim that's there now?

Currently, all of the window/door casing in the house is the standard 2 1/4" trim from when the home was built back in 1992.

Hope this makes sense and thank in advance for your comments

keeping the same trim detail throughout the house will make it look as if its always been there and that was the plan. there are times when a different trim detail gets used in different rooms of the house such as when built up combination casing details are used. the built up look wil be used through out the main floor of a house and the hallways of the upstairs. but then when you go into the bedrooms its simple mitred casing on the doors and windows

in your case i would buy all the trim you need now if its a trim profile that isnt regular stock at the store.. some bigbox stores will bring in trim which doesnt sell very well and all of a sudden they take it off the shelf....if this happens to you and your buying a little at a time you wont be able to finish your project as its intended to be done

This is a VERY good point. After 100 years, my place now has three different variations on the same casing theme. It's all close enough that most will never notice......but I do.

I would personally do it all, because you will notice, even if no one else does. At the very least, I would do all of the casings that face the kitchen doors (anything that you could see standing in the kitchen doorways.) As for the windows....I would also do those. my old house has the pretty much the exact casing you describe around all windows and doors, and I think it looks great.

Woot! After 10 months I cheer with you - I know how that goes!

Sure - do it all. Give the house a makeover and keep it from looking hobbled together and mismatched. It doesn't have to be all done *right now - right away* . . . but over some time if that makes it less daunting. One or two doors per month or weekend might be a reasonable speed.

Thanks everybody! I appreciate your comments. I'll probably go ahead and do all the trim on the main floor as everyone suggests. Expensive I know... but since I'm going to remodel all the other rooms (tear out carpet - install wood flooring, repaint, etc) over the course of the year, I'll just bite the bullet and pay the extra cost and do the trim in each room as I get to them.

Thanks again
