pre-notched chair rail for wainscoting

Hello. I'm making my own wainscoting from 4x8' sheets of beadboard. I can't seem to find the precut chair rail with the 1/4" notch cut out to fit over the top edge of the beadboard. The big orange and blue stores have the kits with base and chair rail, but I don't need the base. And those kits are way overpriced. Any suggestions where I can find the prenotched chair rail, or is there such a thing outside of the kits? Any other ideas to top the wainscoting? I have a full workshop and can use a router or table saw, but the standard chair rail bottom edge seems too thin to rabbet.. Thanks!

Look at the molding at the big box and find a profile that you think will look good as a chair rail that has a thick enough edge to mortise out to fit over you panels.

Another thing you could do is nail the chair rail onto the top edge of the panels and make a nosing to go on top of the chair to hide the edge of the panels.

thanks jiju, good idea, I could add a small 1/4 round to the top of the rail to cover the 1/4" gap. I was just wondering why they don't make precut wainscoting topper except for those expensive kits? Anybody know?

It's made, you just have to get out of the box stores. I'd look for a local lumber company, one that caters to the contractors. I googled your area and came up with J F Johnson Lumber that delivers to your area. They show to have the routed chair rail in stock. The box stores mostly handle goods that move with volume. Chair rail is not a heavy mover. Most door unit operations will also carry a full line of mouldings if you know of one in your area.

Trapper is dead on.

Thanks Trapper! But that dealer is too far south, I am at the top of the Bay. But I will look for local private lumber suppliers. There are still a few "84 Lumber" operations around here, but the box stores are driving them out of business. I'm not sure what you mean by "door unit operations"?

Look for "panel cap".

thanks Bud, we found some of that but it was just a plain narrow piece at the "orange" store. The wife thought about using this with a decorative strip above it. If that's what she wants......... you know the rest!

Intimately familiar with those procedures.:)

Here's some really good pictures if that will help you to show someone what real life is all about. Any real lumber yard would be able to order anything you want if your pockets are deep enough.

Ganging profiles is done all the time as you suggest.

Thanks for the link Bud, I was trying to find a listing of moldings but gave up. There are several moldings on that list that will work. Some will also work with a little modification.

Yeah, Bud, great list. The "Chair rail with rabbet" on their page 48 is exactly what I was looking for! But I don't want to spend a weeks salary to special order that stuff. So I guess I'll buy the regular rail at the orange store and make my own rabbets.
