Pony Wall/Half Wall & Ledge wall??? How to & Correct Terminology

So I want to put a half wall the the entrance to my living room from the front door. I also want to build a 6" deep shelf wall (?) on one wall. Let me see IF I can explain this shelf wall better?? Basically it will be a shelf (for pictures, knick knacks, but will be a wall. Make sense? My thought is 2x4 framing for both walls, but suggestions are MORE THAN WELCOME. On both walls should I install luann (for stability) before the sheetrock? Or would the sheetrock be good enough?

THANK YOU
