Poll on Window Jamb Extensions

I have new white vinyl windows and will be using hickory for the window stools and casings. The poll is if anyone thinks it will look ok or will look bad if I used painted white jamb extensions instead of hickory. This will (a) match the windows and (b) save me quite a bit of money. FYI I would be using a select grade pine that I would paint white. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I think it will look fine---I've trimmed several houses with white interior door jambs and natural stained casing---looks sharp.

Make up a sample and see if you like the look---Mike---

White jambs will force your eye to the casing, rather than natural wood jambs drawing your eye to the white window.

Loneframer, I never thought about it drawing your eye away from the window. Might not not be a bad thing if it looks good

As mentioned I’d do a mock up of both and stare at for a day or two and then decide. Other factors come into play like the balance of color and tones of the entire room.

You can always post some pictures here, would love to see the Hickory.

I don't have the stools made up yet not to mention the mock up, but I was considering not going with the traditional window stool router bit. I ran a piece of the scrap hickory through my router table using a Roman Ogee bit and was contemplating using it for the window stools. Also, does anyone think 2-3/8" is too proud for the stool to stand out past the drywall? Here's a pic, let me know what you all think.

I ultimately deciding on sticking with my window stool router bit. I'm still on the fence about white for the jamb extensions. My wife said she likes the look of the natural pine against the hickory stool and casings, and I think I agree with her. I don't do much carpentry work so it's not exactly my forte or background, so my perception could be off a bit.

Has anyone else done this for other people or themselves? Does anyone else think applying some clear varnish on it all & mixing the pine & hickory would be sacrilege?

I'm not sure I like the look of pine and hickory together.

If hickory is out of the budget I use a wood with similar grain.

Okay I resized the previous picture and made it a click-able thumbnail instead. I'm going to primer white a scrap piece and see what it looks like. I will post a pic later. In the mean time here some clickable thumbnails of what I am working with as of right now.

The wife's vote is natural. I like the natural too, but as you mentioned the grain is much different (much tighter on the hickory). I was planning on not staining just a few coats of clear Helmsman semi-gloss spar urethane, and wasn't sure how the two would look together after they were urethaned. I know it's clear, but I haven't used Spar Urethane before just clear poly. The few types of woods that I have worked with in the past all seem to change in color after the poly sets in. I suppose I will have to test it out on some scraps that I have laying around.
Also, on the subject painting or applying urethane... would it be best to do so on the jamb extensions as individual pieces, or when I have the top & 2 sides nailed together as unit before the final mounting? BTW, Mike, if I didn't say so already, I appreciate all the advice as well everyone else's.
