what nail size do you use for the plywood on the subfloor

8d nails will do the trick. I recommend using some pl400 subfloor adhesive on your joists before laying your subfloor down to eliminate squeaks down the road.

If this is your own home I would recommend using screws. There is such a thing as flooring screws and they don't tend to come out causing squeaks. Have done this to my entire house and it is nice not to hear any noisy squeaks when walking.

screws are great or ring shank nails home depot used to rent a tool that is a screw gun on a long handle so you can screw off an entire house and not kill your back. I forget the name of the tool but it uses belt fed screws. personally I use a stick nailer with the ring shanks, good luck, dont forget the glue.
