I am a DIY with basic carpenter skills. I am wanting to build a free standing pergola on my lower concrete patio. I am new to these type of forums so please bear with me.
I am building a pergola that is 9'h x 10'w x 28'L. I will be using 2x6 boards across the top 16" on center. I plan to use 6x6 post and 2x10 band boards.
My questions are this:
1. How many post do I need running the length (28') of the pergola? I plan to use a post on each corner and one in the center at 14'. If using 2x10 band boards will that be enough post? Are 2x10s overkill and could I get by with 2x8s?
2. Should I double the band boards? One on the front and back side of the post?
As for the material I am looking into cedar but way to expensive. Has anyone ever used the Microshades cedar tone pressure treated lumber from Menards?
Final question: has anyone ever used a product called rescue it? My decks are 5 years old and look like crap already.
