paper siding,,,

noticed a small area on the back deck hidden from direct sunshine that the painters covered last yr prior to moving in,,, look'd ' bubbled ' - a screwdriver later, discovered the siding's friggin' PAPER,,, 3,500sf, 2 story home, over $750k even in today's mkt & the sob's sided w/PAPER !!!! guy at the apron store mentioned louisianna-pacific cellulose & i remember something about that in my foggy part

only 2 courses w/7" exposure approx 3'7" wide,,, bride was adamant to replace w/in-kind but, thankfully, couldn't find any of that **** here in town ( atl )so replaced w/hardiplank,,, this all leads me to suspect there'll be other ' spots ' on the house exhibiting the same damage,,, i'd guess/think we're looking at total siding replacement,,, vinyl's out 'cause it would be the only 1 in the hood,,, alum/hardiplank the only alternatives ??? any experience w/steel ???

thanks, guys !!! certainly appreciate any responses !

1 tip - turn OFF the water at the street when you leave for a week,,, don't ask me how i know this - i just know

paper siding,,,

My regrets wrt to your siding. Were it mine, or a client asked for a recommendation, I would say fibercement. It takes paint well and is impervious to bugs, but you probably already know that. It won't be cheap, but it will last (almost) forever.
Good luck.
BTW, when the topic of vinyl crops up, just say no.

paper siding,,,

yep, that stuff should have been stopped at the Mason Dixon line. The South is full of it.

You can buy time by keeping a good heavy coat of paint on it and be sure bottom edges get an extra brush full.

The problem with this junk shows up at the bottom courses 1st. Taint got to be real smart to know all the rain that hits the side of the house runs down there and some of it even bounces back up. Water surface tension lets the water roll to the bottom edge where the so and so painter didn't bother to put more than one coat.

PS Don't get to close to the bottom with your weed wacker.

friggin' cellulose,,, exactly right - bottom 2 courses,,, replaced w/hardiplank yesterday & will probably use that to recover the house,,, as i recall, hardi also had a problem when 1st distributed in that they used cellulose for the filler,,, as i recall, they've since replaced w/either polypropylene or polyesther fibers & that's decent stuff now.

fortunately, the front's lower 1/2's brick as is the back,,, no trimming next to siding anywhere.

2 kinds of cheap - initial expense & more frequent maintenance,,, i prefer less maintenance which usually translates into higher initial,,, i do hate paying for the same ground twice.

thanks, guys ! ! !

LOL, if the wife would let you... you could brick veneer with extras from your projects.. band with different sizes...offer to paint it if she doesn't like the multi mosaic you create... I have read your good posts....get her drunk first....
