Outdoor chalkboard

I had a question I was wondering what wood to use for a chalkboard outdoors. I was going to use a piece of plywood and use the chalkboard paint. What I was curious about was water proofing it and how I would if it can even be done. Any suggestions would be great thank you!

there is a project on the blue apron site that used hardiboard.
they also just used a flat sheen instead of the $$$ chalkboard paint which they said was not outdoor rated. though I did find a rustoleum product that was spray and rated indoor/outdoor.

How is this going to be used? Kids to scribble on or for a restaurant menu board of something.
