Me build a big desk/craft space . What kind of wood to use . I'm going to paint it

I have always found poplar to be a good wood for painting.

Old slab doors make excellent work surfaces. Not sure exactly what you are looking for.

Best work desk I got was an old drafting table. Very thick wooden top, with heavy duty metal sliding drawers.
