Oak Staircase Squeaking so much

It started with a small squeak about six months ago on perhaps only one stair riser. Now it's gotten so bad that it's driving me nuts. The house is about 17 years old and under the staircase is another staircase going down to the basement with sheet rock above. Is the only solution to open up the sheet rock on the bottom and try to fix? I don't want to put screws/nails on the top since it's all wood. Thanks Jay.

open up the ceiling below and have someone walk on the stairs so you can what treads are moving which is what causes squeaks.. from there construciton adhesive and glue blocks with screws will fix it up along with shims

Check the scotia under the nose o the tread sometimes thats what makes the squeak. One brad may do the trick...worth a shot
