Oak Kitchen Counter sealer ideas

I have installed oak countertops previously, sealed it with 3 coats of poly. I wanted to get away from poly in the kitchen this time, so I used Minwax (paste finishing wax), buffed on with an electric buffer.

I thought the wax would repel water and other liquids. Instead, everything leaves a mark. Water turns it light in color.

I guess this stuff isn't intended for countertops! Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?
