Newel Post Installation

I'm curious what most use to fasten newel posts. I was looking at using this, http://www.stairservice.com/osc/lj3009-newel-post-anchor3-newels-p-1501.html but it doesn't look like it would hold up real well. I was originally planning to use the LJ toggle bolt, but space is not allowing for it, same with the lag screw fastener they have.

Also, when attaching the handrail I noticed the builders in our area just use finish nails, is this pretty standard or is it better to use the lag fasteners?

Newel Post Installation

The link you gave is for people who do not want to redo sheetrock or flooring. It's not very solid.
I either open the floor or the ceiling below and drop the newel post into the recess and bolt it to the framing member.
If you have to repaint, you repaint.

Newel Post Installation

Mine is secured to the floor with a metal fastener under the post. It has never been solid, not even when it was installed.
