Need help with dresser repair

We have a dresser that was my husband's when he was a baby. However, over the years, the wood absorbed odors (mostly from being in storage) and nothing I did would clean it up.

So, we tried our best to exactly replace the dresser's backing and drawers while keeping the drawer facing. However, now the drawers don't sit correctly and fall out really easily. Not exactly what we want in the room of our crawling baby!

Any recommendations on fixing the dresser? By the way, it doesn't have drawer runners, but it never did and the drawers worked fin before.

You have too much of a vertical gap between the drawer sides and drawer opening. I would place blocks on the underside of the drawer opening from the case front to back. Allow about 1/4" to 1/2" clearance. You can stop these spacers short of the face frame by about 1" and they will never be seen.
