Default Mounting a flat panel tv in a cabinet

Hi All,
I just finished building the carcass for an entertainment center and have it installed in my built-in media niche. I now want to "hang" my 52" LCD in the cabinet instead of the TV sitting on it's stand. After it's hung I'll use trim to give it a built-in look.
Rather than buy an expensive articulating mount and cutting a hole in the back to mount it to the studs, I'd like to use a standard fixed LCD/Plasma mount and mount it about 8 inches back from the front of the cabinet so the face of the tv is flush with the front of the cabinet.
I'm thinking of cutting a piece of 3/4" birch plywood to the height of the opening and the width of the TV and mounting it to the top and bottom of the cabinet with 4 heavy duty L brackets to form a plywood wall to hang the mount from. Does that seem like a good approach? Any suggestions on fasteners to attach the L brackets to the cabinet and the mount to the plywood? Any other ideas for this kind of mount?
FYI - The TV weighs 60 pounds.
Thanks for your help.
Bill
