MDF or not for Crown Molding in So Cal

I will be hanging crown molding in my home in Lake Forest, CA, that is about 15 miles inland from the coast and on the inland sice of the coastl mountains. It is dry with little humidity.

I will use paint grade and have done a small room with MDF, but am wondering if I should step up to a less expensive real wood for any reason.

If anyone can suggest a better supplier, and I am wondering about buying crown on line, so far I have bought ultralite mdf manufactured by El & El Wood Products at Woodstone Moldings in Lake Forest, CA.

If ordering on line is allright, El & El is an hour's drive and delivers to my area.

I will be using quality equipment, DeWalt saw and pneumatic nailers. Sizes will run from 5" to 8" and I may do a two piece job on a high ceiling.

TIA.

MDF is fine. Most online suppliers are fine to use. I get a lot of supplies this way.

Cool. I will hunt down some with reasonable shipping costs and prices, whicih means in the So Cal market. I will stick with ultralite mdf.

Klaw, It may be a long haul (almost 50 miles) but Anderson Plywood in Culver City has a big selection of mouldings. They are just around the corner from Anderson Plywood. There are also probably other sources in the South Bay area.

Thanks, Bob. It just so happens I will be out that way early next month. I will try to check out the moldings. I will try and knock out a bill of materials beofre heading out that way.

There is a Ganahl Lumber about 5 miles from me. I briefly looked at there moldings some time ago. Both Anderson's and Ganahl are vendors for one of Gary Katz's sponsors; Windsor One. I need to check out if there stuff is too pricy and if they even carry MDF.

Ganahl Lumber is a top drawer dealer. The Los Alamitos Ganahl sponsored a presentation by Gary in 2005 that was one of his first shows.

I have used Ganahl a few time in the past for hard to find items. Once I needed a nice piece of wood for some purpose and they milled it for me. They handle top line paint.
