If you live in a drought stricken desert and only want it to last one season then maybe.

MDF disintegrates in moister, you can't use it outside.

Even plywood properly primed and painted would last longer then MDF.

I agree with the others, mdf is not made for exterior use.

But from personal experience, I was working for a construction company several years ago, we were building a housing community took about 4 years from the time I built a sign to the time to remove the sign.
Was simple 2, 4x4 post in the ground and a full sheet of 3/4" mdf.
We sent the mdf to a sign shop to have it painted, company logo and lettered as "the Vineyard" name of the development.
We all laughed when we took it down, was as good as the day we put it up.
Then had to decide who wanted to take it home and cut it up for other projects, was to good to throw away if someone wanted it.

I really think it was due to the quality of paint the sign shop used, for your needs, maybe ask in the paint forum and see what they suggest?
mdf is a dusty product to work with, but is really sweet to route and sand, perfect for projects like you are talking about.

As a side note, I talked about that sign once with current employer.
He once was looking for donations for a non profit org he was helping, a sign company had a bunch of paint they donated.
He did not know what it was, claims it was best he ever used.
So is why I suggest it may work for you.

Sealing the stuff is a key. That, and there are several different variations. I'm on a couple of other forums with members from Europe and MDF is a preferred exterior shutter material in some places.
