Making a doorway into a display unit
We have a double door way going into our lounge and we do not need it as we have another door .
We want to remove the double doors but leave the door frame and build a small cupboard at the bottom with shelves above it, and want to put glass in one side of it.
This will let in light from the lounge to the hallway.
Has anyone please got any ideas of how I can do this without it still looking like a doorway.
Susie, this is a complex question. Really the key to making it NOT look like it was a door revolves around the biggest issue:
Built in shelving and cubbards are not opened all the way to the floor level. They are framed in completely on the top, sides and bottom. This can be done very easily, but you would need to remove the existing door casing in order to install a bottom area with some height that will take away from the 'door' concept. You would then need to do some fancy trim work to make it all tie-in and then install casing in a 'picture-frame' design around your new opening. That is for the front area. There is more involved for the rest of the project.
In my opinion, I would love to do a project like that. It is definitily do-able, and if done right, you will not be able to tell that it was ever a door.
Start out by designing it 'on-paper' play with your ideas...along the line of actually thinking about 'how you would build' the ideas.
For now, that is what I have to offer.
Just as a very quick note, perhaps I'll post more later, but you could install some raised panels (or at least raised panel look) across the bottom, giving it the look of a permanently designed piece of furniture. As was mentioned, you wouldn't want to go all the way to the floor with the shelves.
The material used depends on the decor of the home, of course. If things are painted, you can use MDF for the panels and just paint them.
At the top of the panels, you could have a 'wider than the thickness of the wall' board. This would mimic the top of an armoire type display cabinet.
