Many if my fears have subsided a bit. Still gotta find/buy a nailer I like. Going to work on my bookcase first, and I'll update you guys once I "break ground" so to speak.

I've done plenty of ceilings like this. Where the beams cross the joists, you can screw the 2x4's directly to them. In the areas where they don't I have used toggle bolts. One every 3 feet will do.
