Lightening the wood underneath kitchen cabinet hardware.

We are updating our kitchen. Our wood cabinets are 40 years old and in excellent shape. The original door handles have a 1" by 7" metal backing plate and underneath it the wood is much darker than the rest of the cabinet. It is not dirt. It almost looks as though the rest of the wood has been bleached lighter by the sun coming in the windows. We do not want to use a backing plate. Is there a simple way of lightening the darker wood to match the rest of the door without having to go through the bother of stripping? Thanks for any help.

Betty, Welcome to the Forum

There is a wealth of info on this forum but don't drop out if you do not get a simple solution for your problem. Wood is much easier to darken than to lighten.

Sorry but I do not know of any way to lighten your dark 1' x 7" dark area to match the rest of the door without stripping the whole door.

Thanks, Bob. I feared that would be the case so last night I scrubbed a few of the cabinets really well with a scrubbie and some Lestoil then used Old English dark stain and buffed until there was a sheen and put on the new hardware. You can still make out where the darker stain is, but now it looks like it is a shadow from the new handle, which is acceptable to me. I'll do all the cabinets and drawers that way and maybe in another 40 years the sun will bleach them all the same color.

Thank you for your response.
