Ledger boards

Am planning a 24 x 16 deck on my camp and have a question about the ledger boards. I know I cannot get a 2x10 in 24 ft so the ledger will be made of multiple pieces. My question is should I use 2 12 footers or 3 8 footers or does it matter at all ? I am going to order the materials this weekend.

Where are these going to be attached to the house? FOundation, where the siding is?
Reason I ask is, it's far better to buld a free standing deck when ever possible. The reason is there will be 0 chance of wall damage that way.
Also make sure the top of the deck boards is at least 4" below any door openings or water will end up getting in under the threshold.

If you insist on attaching to the side of the house it's best to add a spacer so the ledger is not tight to the wall, and never have the decking sitting tight to the wall for water run off.
