Laundry Room Project - advice needed
I am organizing my laundry - more shelves, drawers and such. There is one thing I want to do, but the details are alluding me and it is probably more easy than I am making it out to be. What I want to do is install a rod to hang the close on that come out of the dryer. The dig is this, I want it to be retractable.

I have thought about drawer slide guides mounted in a way under a shelf, then with the rod attached to a wooden slide, it can be pushed back under the shelf. No slide guide I found (at least online) are not wide enough - my rod is about an 1.75 inches, so the slide I'd like to be the same width.

The other thought is that the rod, when not used, lies flat against the wall. When it is needed, it could be folded out to be horizontal. I have no clue on hardware for this one, as it would have to lock when hrizontal.

If you have the room, you could take a piece of black pipe, say 8 feet X 1" or 1-1/2" support the middle and position another support to the side4 feet. Each would have holes drilled to accept the pipe. Cap each end. You can pull the pipe out 4 feet, do your work, then push it back out of the way. If you use nylon bushings and the like, it should push quite easily.

Do you have the space to put a pair of the closet rod support? You could put your rod in when needed and pull it out when not.

Just a couple of thoughts...

This one is in the UK, but there's many different things like this they might work for you.

I think what you are looking for is a "Full Extension Drawer Slide"
You are going to want to mount one side of the slide to a piece of 2x2 so you have enough meat to screw it under your cabinet and then you will need to create a flat spot in your dowel just enough so the screw holes will meet against some flat wood and then attach the other side of the slide to that and away you go.
I included another way of doing this which.
