Any body know a good place to purchase oak kite winders 3 piece for stairs. I might might make them
Nope in the us. Kite winder came up on google. Its refering to the one that looks a kite. The other two look like pies. Didn't know if you had any good recomndations?Michael Thomas said:Are you in the UK? I've never heard the term "kite winder" used in the US.
Hey i found a place that makes them all three for 160 bucks. With dimesion custom cuts asuming 90 degrees on piesjiju1943 said:I had to Google also Michael as I have never heard of a kite tread either but I see why they call it that.
You will not find a place that sells a kite tread as there are just too many variables that will make that tread in different dimensions. You will have to buy a blank and cut it yourself.
Glue and nail. These are exsisting pine treads that look like crap and the soft ring has worn away. Bought 11 1/2 by 36 at depot fot 21 dollars a piece. Think i am going to get two big one and spline and poxy them together and then cut the winder out. What do you think. What is a good brand of poxy to use. For the spline.Keith Mathewson said:How are you planning on attaching the tread to the rough framing?
How do you suggest fastening them. What if i nail them at an angleKeith Mathewson said:You don't need a spline or epoxy, just edge glue them together with yellow glue. What you need to be concerned with is seasonal wood movement. If you use construction adhesive and nails on a large winder tread it will split over time.
I can do any thing except slam dunkKeith Mathewson said:Housed stairs are where the stringer is mortised to receive the treads and risers. They are then wedged from below. These represent the highest quality of stair work and assure a squeak free stair. They are however outside the range of a DIY...
Nice presentation on the topic. In that case here is a link to some vids I did on housed stringers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrFdO-y1YVM. These are geared toward stairbuilders. It is a brief overview and does not cover how to layout winders.
I will check it out and you a very helpful. Thanks a lot.Keith Mathewson said:In that case here is a link to some vids I did on housed stringers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrFdO-y1YVM. These are geared toward stairbuilders. It is a brief overview and does not cover how to layout winders.
Yeah screw that i am not remoldeling the stair but just refacing it. You are correct in saying it is out of the diy range. Sorry i doubted you. Cool videoianc435 said:I will check it out and you a very helpful. Thanks a lot.
