new doors - here a differing profile can change the look and is a substantial change and upgrade
new cabinets - if you truly want a new kitchen look
i recently opted for #3 - layout stayed the same as it worked ok and to keep the cost down, but added counter depth refrigerator alcove and updated island, plus prefab granite countertops
In our last home we were faced with a similar situation when we remodeled.
I wanted a whole new look, but our budget was limited. We decided to add new doors, only because we were thinking of selling in a couple of years, which we did. The cabinets were made of plywood so we felt they were OK. We ended up putting on beautiful Oak doors and stained the sides and doors in a dark stain. It turned out beautiful.
Hope this helps.
