Keeping Door Propped Open
My wife always likes to keep the door to the garage propped open a foot or so. Several reasons really, give the cat access, keep the garage a bit cooler and more ventilated, etc. She currently accomplishes this in pretty crude fashion- wedges a folding chair in between the door and the wall or the door and the frame. As I just painted the door and wall, I need to find a better way. The door is a good 6" above the garage floor, so a simple door stop won't work.
My first attempt was a chain bolted to the back of the door and to the wall in the garage. Works ok, but the chain makes a lot of noise when the door is open and knocks stuff over.
Then I thought about the pneumatic door closers commonly used on commercial doors. Look nice, a bit pricey, but I can't seem to find one that will lock in a particular position. Then, there are the storm/screen/patio door closers. Most (at least what I've seen at Home Depot/Lowes) seem very flimsy and I doubt will last very long with a solid-core wooden door.
What other options are there? Should be easy to use, pretty unobtrusive, and be able to keep the door open both a small distance from closing and open all the way (for bringing groceries in and out and such).
