"Joist span" for "drop ceiling" question....

Basically my (old) house has no "Trusses" rather just 2x6 running the length of the builiding with vertical supports underneath... i'm not really sure where they line up with the interior walls....

... remodeling one of the rooms, I don't really want to attach my drywall to this roof structure in case that it needs someday to be torn off, and replaced...

I don't really need or want the actual drop ceiling with the metal grid and tiles, i'd rather just sheetrock it. I'm thinking I can run 2x4 along the perimiter of the exterior walls at the level I want the ceiling, and then attach 2x4 across the span to serve as "rafters" using joist hangers for attaching. The total span is 11'-1" Will 2x4 spaced at 16 OC be sufficient to support a single layer of sheetrock?

Thanks

No 2x4's will not make this span with a drywall load on it.
