I just installed several new double-hung vinyl replacement windows & am having a heck of a time re-installing the trim. All the decorative stops at the head jamb of the window are sitting proud & I need advice on how to thin them.
The primary problem is due to the use of an 'expander' on top of the windows to close the gap between the top of the frame & the head jamb. This is a vinyl channel, approximately 1/16 - 1/8" thick, that holds insulation & slides over the window frame. The result is that 90 % of the frame has one 'elevation' while the top has another. I can get the bottom of the stop trim to sit where it should, but then when I get to the top, it projects (sits proud) past the edge of the head casing. The result looks terrible.
What's the best way to deal with this? Should I try to shave them down using a table saw or planer before I install? (I really don't want to use the planer as many of the stops are only 3/4 inch wide).
So the bottom and sides work fine, but just the top is sticking out past the wall?
If these are normal extension jambs, put a mark on the top of the jam that is flush with the wall and run it through your table saw. Depending on the "decorative" features of the jam, you need to determine to cut the side of the wall or where it rests against the window. Reinstall and put your casing on and you should be good to go.
From your description, it is a little tough to picture but if it is a "normal" window replacement, this should work fine.
If the wall is not straight where you need to rip the jamb you can rip it to the widest point with a bevel on your table saw and then use your planer to shape to the line. The bevel makes the planing easier. Its some work so if your painting caulk goes along way here.
Why did you use the head expander? When possible we try not to use them unless the window was ordered too short. If the top interior stop will cover the gap and reach the edge of the window unit itself, i would just cut off the inside lip of the head expander. If not, then you will have to modify the wood as sugested with a table saw.
Ditto on that, never use the header expander for the very reason the thread was started. But I don't throw them all away, the longer ones come in handy for glass block installations.
