Insulating and soundproofing a basement

I am going to be framing my basement in the next month and have 2 questions as far as soundproofing from the living room up above what is the best value? Is it better to use some sort of insulation or some other material to diminish sound from the main floor? What type of insulation should I use between the 2x4's and the block wall basement? Do I also need to put plastic between the insulation and the drywall?

Thanks,

Jacads

Insulating and soundproofing a basement

I have heard that if you use insulation as a soundproofing make it as tight and compact as possible stuffing the bay full. You want to do the total opposite you would if using it for actual insulation. I have also heard that it is not very effective. I do not know the best thing to use and look forward to suggestions as I want to know the same thing.

I have another question If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate your response.

I have conventionally framed several basements and always worked well, never had any problems. I am however wondering if anyone has ever used ferring strips directly shot into concrete and Mold/Mildew sheetrock directly over it. Essentially making the wall about 1 1/4" thick. Ever done it? Did you use solid insulation in between ferrings? Does the condrete wall breathe enough? Any input?
