installing vinyl siding

I am planning on installing vinyl siding on my home. The prblem I'm facing is, I wanted to remove the old cedar siding because it is in such bad shape in spots, but there is no plywood behind it. Is it ok to remove the wood siding and install the vinyl ontop the insulation into the studs? Will removing the wood siding weaken the stability of my home.

Removing all the cedar......
Yes this will jeopardize the integrity of the structure
No it's not okay to install siding to insulation & studs.

Cut out the bad section of cedar and patch in the same thickness of plywood or Remove all the cedar and resheath with plywood.

Reading your questions, I would strongly suggest that you read up on how to install housewrap and siding.
There's a lot more to it than just covering the building......

Unless of course you wanted to tear off all of the cedar siding and put on new sheathing and housewrap.

You mean plywood when you say sheathing? There some type of foamboard underneath now.

You need to get a contractor out there to look at that or post some pics.

You're feeding us bits and pieces of info.

A house is made up of many parts & pieces that all work together to create a solid structure.

Understand how your house is put together.

Yes, pictures, we love pictures.....

Common to frame a house with with Celotex or shiny 1/4" cardboard sheathing on it, yesteryear...... http://www.inspectapedia.com/structu..._Sheathing.htm

Didn’t have the “drain plane grooves” then; http://www.berryplasticsbpg.com/prod...ermo-ply-total

installing vinyl siding

It's hard to see. I didn't want to take off an entire piece of siding. It is wood siding with foil lined insulation sheets, with fiberglass insulation behind it. I'm thinking I might just let a contractor install the vinyl, but my problem is one says I shouldn't remove the wood siding and just go over it. And another says I should take the wood off , because it is warping in so many spots, plus the j channels would stick out further than the frames. I would prefer to remove the wood, but I'm worried about loosing structural stability.

Tear off a section of the siding near a corner -
see if there's plywood running about 4' out from the corner.
If there is, install the new siding over the existing sheathing.
If there's foam all the way to the corner - bust through the foam and
see if there's metal "t" strips or "cut in braces" against the face of the
drywall.

that kind of siding has no real ''structurability'' to it,remove the existing siding ,mark where your studs are[ imo you should install a housewrap] then side it

you can also install another layer of foam over this sheathing
