Installing exterior door chain
I moved into a NYC apartment, and bought a chain to put on the metal apartment door.
But I can't find any screws that will hold in the metal. I put sheet metal screws in, but they have nothing to hold onto
I put plastic anchors in, but they pulled right out
The actual cavity that the screw goes into is pretty small, and the metal itself is obviously very thin, so a molly doesn't seem like it will work either
One option is pop-rivets. Note: the hole size drilled in the door must be exactly the size specified on the rivet package.
I would think that the door has a framework around the edges. This would be where you should install the screws. Try drilling a small hole near the edge of the door and see if you get wood shavings coming out. (or thicker metal)
They actually make a bolt called a "sex bolt", (no kidding). It is a two-part bolt that bolts thru the entire door. The part that would be on the outside of the door is smooth so it can't be undone.
Hope this helps.
A nut and bolt will do the job just the same, be sure to put the bolt head outside. They may be able to loosten it up a little but with a wrench but without acess to both sides they won't be able to completly unthread it.
I like the pop rivet idea personally though.
Another thing to take into consideration is ownership of the door. If you put bolts through my metal door, well you just lost your security deposit. Altough NYC landlords tend to be pretty lax on things like that.
